Kitchen Shelving Solution

Whether you celebrate Easter or Passover this week, you're likely to spend some time preparing food for family and friends.  Do you feel frustrated in your kitchen with hard-to-access items in your pantry?

Recently, one of my clients who has just moved into her new home told me that she's so happy with the layout and style of the kitchen.  But she's immediately irritated whenever she opens a cupboard door.  The shelves don't move and many of her containers and packages are difficult to access.

I suggested that she check out Gliding Shelf Solutions to see if they could convert her existing cabinets with custom pull-out shelves.   Imagine  opening up your cupboards and seeing this:

Please forward this blog post to your family, friends and colleagues.  Have a wonderful holiday!!

Indoor vegetable garden for your kitchen

Last year, while watching Dragons' Den on TV, I saw an incredibly innovative solution to year-round fresh herbs and veggies in your home:  the Urban Cultivator.  Interested in learning more about this novel appliance, I contacted their head office in Vancouver.  The size of a wine fridge, it can be built into the cabinetry of a new kitchen renovation like a dishwasher, or it can be a stand-alone appliance on wheels.

I think this is perfect for vegetarians and those people concerned about eating fresh, healthy home-grown greens year-round in Canada.  The distributor for the Urban Cultivator is Appliance Love,  located in downtown Toronto and Mississauga.

Looking forward to hearing your feedback.  Do you think this is something that will one day be as essential to the modern kitchen as the refrigerator and stove?

Interior Design Show Highlights

IDS13 was one of the best yet in terms of creative ideas and innovative products.  As you walked into the Convention Centre, there were enormous balloon structures floating above the escalators.

I found out afterwards that this installation comprised of 1,600 twisted balloons was created by 25-year-old Willy Chyr, a Toronto born artist now based in Chicago.

For those coffee aficionados who are renovating their kitchens in the near future, here's something to consider.

Miele has a cappuccino/espresso maker designed for built-in cabinetry, just like a wall oven or microwave.

I've selected Satin Finish Soho hardwood flooring for a few of my client projects.  At their booth, the flooring on the floor was especially interesting.
Imagine my  surprise when I found out that flooring was actually laminate.  That's right, laminate.  Something to consider when hardwood flooring isn't practical or doesn't fit in the budget.  From Satin Finish's High Performance Collection, it's colour Nordic Ice.

The Interior Design Show never fails in delivering fabulous backsplash tile.  This year the one that caught my eye was a combination of iridescent, pearly tiles.
Tones of grey, soft brown and cream - absolutely gorgeous.

The last item that caught my eye was a new line from Buhler Furniture.  Manufactured in Winnipeg, this company specializes in wood media cabinets,  many with fireplaces.  This is their first foray into contemporary design and I especially like the flexibility of design and colour.
Available in 6 different designs and 4 different wood finishes that can be mixed and matched, I'm so happy to have a Canadian-made contemporary cabinet to recommend to my clients.

Which ones are your favourites?  Please let me know what you think and as always, please forward this blog post to your friends and colleagues.

Happy New Year!

Hard to believe that we're already halfway through January .... time is flying by so quickly.  Wishing all of you a happy and healthy 2013!  If you're like me and have been hit by the nasty flu bug going around, there's an emphasis on the word "healthy".

To start off your year satisfying your search for new and interesting design, I highly recommend the annual Interior Design Show to be held in Toronto January 26th and 27th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

I'll be personally attending the show on Trade Day - Friday January 25th - and will report my findings in future blogs. As always, I'm interested in hearing about your own experience.  Let me know if you find something you think fellow subscribers of this blog will be interested in.  I've already heard that one subscriber, Michelle from Ottawa, will be attending.  Have a fantastic time!
